About the role:

We are looking for an experienced Design Engineer to join our Engineering and Design team. This role is centered on providing safe and effective solutions for the development of our distribution assets.

In this role you will have responsibility for design and development of MainPower’s electrical reticulation network, including both overhead and underground assets, at both low voltage and distribution voltages. You will undertake detailed design for new builds, upgrades, and replacements, in support of both network and customer-driven projects. You will also participate in the ongoing development of MainPower standards and design software.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan and scope design projects to provide accurate information for budgeting and detailed design
  • Perform engineering calculations, software modelling, and technical assessments to ensure safe, compliant, and functional outcomes
  • Produce high quality design documentation, including plans, specifications, drawings, schematics and reports
  • Communicate effectively with all relevant stakeholders to ensure optimal solutions
  • Liaise with external design consultants and suppliers, including writing project scopes and reviewing deliverables
  • Provide sound technical advice to support other MainPower teams in the planning, construction, operation, maintenance, and renewal of MainPower assets
  • Ensure Safety in Design principles and practices are applied to all stages of the asset lifecycle
  • Assess alternative solutions, technologies, and equipment objectively and rigorously
  • Collaborate with other industry participants, with a particular focus on standardisation

About you:

You will have a strong background in producing designs and project plans for both HV and LV networks and will be very familiar with design requirements for underground, ground-mounted, and overhead network assets. You will be analytical and methodical, with a flair for communicating technical information. You will enjoy turning problems into solutions and seeing projects through from concept to completion.

Additionally, you will bring:

  • Relevant professional qualification
  • Design experience in a New Zealand electricity distribution context
  • Proficiency with CAD and drawings management
  • Strong technical knowledge of industry standards and regulations
  • Excellent management of workflow and documentation
  • Solid grounding in Safety in Design
  • Experience with design software such as Neara, COLDNet, or PLS-CAD is preferred
